Crafting the perfect formula

Our experienced formulators crafted a unique blend of performance ingredients with luxury botanical extracts imbued with the mythology and wisdom of ancient Chinese medicine.  Explore the history of some of our key ingredients below.

Sophora Angustifolia root extract

Named Kushen, or ‘bitter shen’, Sophora has long been used in Chinese medicine for the treatment of skin irritation and redness. The first known formula containing Sophora was published in 1742 AD, in the Yi Zong Jin Jian, an historic Chinese medicine textbook, compiled for the Qing Palace of Emperor Hongli.  It was prepared as a wash or a cream applied to the skin, to heal skin inflammation due to eczema or other rashes.

Sophora root extract contains Matrine and Oxymatrine alkaloids, and is used in modern formulations for its skin brightening, pigment controlling effects, as well as its ability to soothe redness and stimulate cell regeneration.

Niacinamide

Niacinamide is part of the essential Vitamin B3 complex, and is known to work against ageing by repairing UV damage, and acting as an anti-oxidant.  The molecule is believed to supply the skin’s cells with regenerative energy by donating NADP+.  It is a long-term favourite of dermatologists for its anti-inflammatory, anti-acne, anti-ageing and texture-improving effects.  It was first discovered and isolated from natural sources at the start of the 20th century, and since then has become extremely popular in high end skincare formulations.

Tremella Fuciformis Extract

Tremella Fuciformis is also known as ‘snow mushroom’ a sweet tasting mushroom long used in Chinese medicine both as a superfood ingredient and as a topical beauty treatment.  Reputed for it’s ability to maintain beautiful, youthful skin, it has been regarded as an ancient beauty secret of Chinese and Japanese women.  Legend has it that it was a preferred beauty treatment of Yang Guifei – one of the Four Beauties of ancient China, whose beauty allured an emperor and destroyed a dynasty.  Historically, women typically ate the mushroom in addition to applying it externally, to nurture a beautiful complexion from the inside out.

Tremella Fuciformis reduces skin inflammation and redness, and synergistically hydrates the skin with hyaluronic acid-like molecules that penetrate and plump up the deeper levels of the dermis.
